Post subject: Sasha needs Music Theory Lessons!! |
|
|
Well, I listened to Wavey Gravy finally on July 1st. I have to say I like most of the ideas and the sounds in the track, but his melodic vs. countermelodic ideas seem to clash at times. Imagine sitting in front of your favorite midi sequencer software in the piano roll mode with a given minor scale and a pre-existing groove line. 1-2-3 improve me a line! I understand that with dance music it's hard to be exact with your harmonic intentions, especially with delays and filters to make the job even tougher, but come on Sasha. Surely when you worked with BT or your other engineers you took note of how they progressed their non-looped ideas. This is only one Track. I pray that you didn't take the same approach to music making for your other songs...Brother I enjoy your music so much. The dark, mellow atmospheres you are able to create. It bugs me to see you F$@& up a song with this illogical improvisational line you wanted to use. This is not some obscure modal, or atonal scale you are using. This is a simple minor scale with chromatic adjustments. I so badly wanna get in there and adjust those notes....damn it dude do it again. I love the hook, the sound, the mood. Remix it. Shit, send me the f$@&in' partitioned tracks and I'll do it free of charge....or do like hybrid and hire a musicologist/ composer to look over the tracks before release. Music needs to progress properly..or if you don't wanna adhere to simple rules of music theory do atonal dance music..or just,....KEEP IT SIMPLE! groovability is good. Oddly enough a week before I listened to Wavey Gravy I constructed a track at 108bpm entirely in 'Reason'. This track, again, oddly has this elect. piano improve section in Eb minor. I am ashamed to say that my production work on this song pleases and involves me so much more than Wavey Gravy. I will write another review once I have heard the other tracks. I look forward to hearing these songs. Peace Brother. T. Heitlauf aka Fugal Development

I just got an FAO package from BMG/Sasha with his latest serving of delicious audio. It is an elite album. Exellent time well spent mate! The elements are very nice indeed, it certainly has that dark mood Sasha sense about it. Some of the tracks like "Boileroom" sound like a Hybrid composure but it is probably just me identifying a particular bass synthesis.
It really shows his colors with this album, the talent, the equipment he has and the style. Sasha has never disappointed me. He is by all means a musician god.
Thanks so much for the CD guys! Love ya loads.

"Airdrawndagger" is an excellent album well worthy of the hype it has been getting. If you are only interested in traditional dance floor material, then this CD may dissappoint. But if you have always liked Sasha because of the way he progresses with his sound over the years, you will no doubt love this album. Mostly breakbeat, the album bleeds good taste and influence. Think Brian Eno, Vangelis, Tangerine Dream mixed with modern elements like Hybrid, Plump DJs, BT, Junkie XL etc.. "Magnetic North" and "Cloud Cuckoo" are the definite highlights of the album. Both filled with chilled out breaks, they take the traditional Sasha progressive house sound and fuse some interesting, non 4/4 beats into the mix. Thankfully enough, no track on the album is afraid to experiment with a little melody, either. The melodic patterns on this CD reminds one of the brilliant producers that have worked on this album; people like Junkie XL, Charlie May, James Holden, and of course Sasha.
These songs create atmosphere, whether you are partying, driving, chilling out, making love, etc..
This is the kind of album that will only be loved or hated.

overhyped, a good album yes, but not as good as they present it. i've listened the whole album a couple of times, i still havent made up my mind, i want to listen it more carefully, but first impression was dissapointment. Its just too chilled out, it needs a bit more energy, a kick, thats what it lacks. I'll go listen it again and see if i can make up my mind, wether it is a masterpiece or just a good album.
