Boral Kibil - Paradox EP

"Paradox" apparently, is about Turkish producer explorer Boral Kibil who probably didn't foresee his life being told to a soundtrack of wobbling dubstep basslines, pulses of intergalactic melody and Boards of Turkey-style analogue synths. The EP it's also unusually
abrasive, dominated by a buzzing throb. Clattering cymbals closely tail each surge of this gargantuan saw-like synth, which Boral Kibil barely bothers to whittle down with filters.

Loquai remix plays out exactly as the previous description implies. Bell-like bass sets up the carefree mood, chiming along with a lying-in-a-gently-rocking-rowboat kind of cadence. For most of the time, this actually functions both as bassline and as melody. In the mid-section,
however, Franzis-D introduces a whirling, super-short sequence on top; almost like a bird call. Playing with the settings on this second bit, he keeps it constantly morphing, working hard to briefly capture attention before returning to the pleasant, noncommittal lull of before. As
you'd expect, "Paradox" is very, very different. Splicing in distant-sounding wails, Stanisha and Erdi Irmak have created a menacing and atmospheric piece. What impresses most is the clear separation between these ghostly tendrils and the gloomy ping-ponging which makes up the foreground; there's obviously some masterful sound design at work.

The remix of Dj Duma is hyperactive digital steel drums and angular, robotic beats veer more towards a twisted, urban house sound than the Greece funky banner. A singularly emotional, pared back approach to progressive music has become Mahmut Orhan and Marcu Vershi doesn't disappoint in that respect. Underpinned by the percussive slap of a sultry tango tempo, it trots rather than gallops, shot through with distorted echo and mournful pads.
