Party Report: Marcel Woods presents Musical Madness

© Become1 To celebrate the upcoming release of his brand new compilation CD, Marcel Woods and Become1 organised the second edition of the Musical Madness party concept on November 3rd, 2006. Included in the line-up were Benjamin Bates, Eddie Halliwell, Benny Rodrigues, DJ Dazzle and of course mister Woods himself, making this quite the party! Head on in for details.

This was actually the second edition of Musical Madness. Earlier this year the first one was held in Culemborg featuring an equally impressive line-up.
One of the main reasons for throwing this party was of course the release of Marcel Woods' upcoming compilation called High Contrast Recordings presents Marcel Woods. The names in the line-up were handpicked by Woods himself to ensure a wide variety of interesting styles to be played. The organisation of this event was done by Become1, a new organiser which wants to fill a gap in the Eindhoven region by hosting quality parties in the future.

We first thought we'd be having a hard time finding the venue, but all this turned out a deception soon after we left our train. "Klokgebouw" actually means clock building in Dutch, and seeing there was a building with a gigantic clock on it right next to the train station...
Anyway, we arrived quite early (23:00) so the queues were of a highly acceptable level. The location is actually an abandoned Philips plant, a thing which came forward directly when entering. The interior shone out a clean industrial look with its straight on going corridors and slightly crumbled walls, making the whole thing a rather unique experience right from the start. Lockers were placed for people to put their stuff in, a thing which we gladly made use of.

The main room perfectly accentuated the industrial look of the building, being quite squarish with thick pillars in the middle. On the ceiling hung a rather simple yet effective array of lighting. The area around the DJ booth was quite cool: two gigantic ventilators were placed on both sides, with some effective vertical lighting placed right in front of the DJ. The main bar was located at the left of the room, stretched out long enough to maintain tolerable waiting times. At the opposite side there was a small lounge area with intimate lighting, clear white couches and some nice decoration. Nice to hang out on when you're tired from some hard clubbing!
Benny Rodrigues was finishing his set just after we entered. Quite a shame he had to play at such an early part of the evening, 'cause not that many people were there yet to enjoy his music. He spun deep, groovy stuff, none of which I knew by name but it definitely sounded very good looking at his goal: building up the night a bit.

Soon after, Dutch mastermind Benjamin Bates hit the decks to bring a housy, groovy set filled with lots of his own tracks. His highly succesful remix for Phunk-A-Delic's 'Rockin' came by, as well as his recent hit 'Pure', the awesome 'Shelter' lots of other material produced by him and Marco V. One of my personal highlights was Jordy Lishious' 'Raw', a really cool, pumping houser soon to be out on Big And Dirty. As Benjamin's set progressed, three wicked lasers starting doing their thing: one placed in the middle above the DJ and two at each side of the DJ booth.

More and more people started filling up the dancefloor as mister Bates was churning out tune after tune. The place literally rammed itself in less than half an hour, which did add to the party atmosphere of course, but was also annoying at times because of the minimal amount of square meters we had for ourselves. Luckily though, we found ourselves a better spot away from the booth a bit, readying ourselves for Marcel Woods' set.
The Woodsman spun a set filled with quite a few of his own productions: I heard 'Basik' and 'Don't Tar Me With The Same Brush', as well as a compilation of all his most recent tunes in a very cool mash-up. Both 'Advanced' and 'Cherry Blossom' did their work as expected, but to me the best tune he played was the giganticly cool 'Crazy Cursor' by Tocadisco. If that isn't a floorkiller nothing is! Bolier & Coenraad's famous 'Might Ducks' track came by too, soon followed by the immensely popular 'Life Less Ordinary' by MORPH & Rank 1 and Sander van Doorn's pumping remix of Arctic Quest's 'Sun Goes Down'.

A little sidenote about the overall atmosphere that was present during the event. I read that quite a few free tickets were given away because the presale didn't go too well. This resulted in more 'one-time clubbers' to attend the party, which definitely came forward when looking at the dancefloor. Quite a few people just stood there a bit. I don't blame these people in any way of course, if they had a good time it's fine by me. But a party with more enthusiasts is always preferred, naturally.

About 1,5 to 2 hours later, Eddie Halliwell from the UK took over. And boy did he shake things up! I had heard an awful lot about his amazing skills before I attended this party, so my expectations were quite high. He lived up to every one of them! He's kind of like a turntable/CDJ magician, jamming out trick after trick, scratching, doing the weirdest moves and whipping up the crowd like no other. He kickstarted with an edit of Marco V's 'Indicator', which instantly blew up the dancefloor. After this, he only got better: lots of harsh techy tracks were played, spiced up by perfectly fitting scratch moves and good transitions. If you've never seen this guy perform before go see him as fast as you can, it's something you won't easily forget.

Next to all the usual drinks, there were some food stands to energize hungry clubbers. We got ourselves a dry ketchup-drenched hotdog for 4,50 euro's (!!). At least we learned a lesson! The bar crew was quite fast most of the time, so no complaining there.
As Halliwell finished his set, DJ Dazzle entered the DJ booth to close off the night in style. The Dutch DJ from the city of Breda knew how to keep us entertained by bringing lots of raw tunes, including Ferry Corsten's 'Cubikated' and some cool energetic trance from the Black Hole label. A cool surprise was that Halliwell joined Dazzle for a while to do a wicked back2back set, with Dazzle doing the usual spinning and Eddie scratching at the background. Quite cool! A lot of people had left already though, and when the lights went on around 06:10 we were tired like crazy and headed back for the first morning train.

Conclusion

All in all, this was quite the cool party. It's definitely not the best one I've ever visited, but it certainly was enjoyable because of the very original choice of venue (I love the industrial feel) and the amazing music brought by the DJ's. The crowd wasn't all that, but there were enough diehards out there to make this a cool night nonetheless.
This was the first event organised by Become1 (as far as I know), and what it looks like they're sure to be another great addition to Holland's party scene. See you next time!
